Portland’s five-week closure of southbound Interstate 5 near the Rose Quarter is creating longer commutes, but neighborhood traffic has begun to stabilize.

Transportation officials had warned that travel times could double or even triple during the closure.

OPB reports that trips near the construction zone are currently taking as much as 2.5 times longer than normal.

All southbound lanes between I-405 and I-84 are closed while crews replace aging concrete and complete seismic improvements along the roughly two-mile stretch.

The closure began in September and is scheduled to continue through October 16.

Drivers have been encouraged to use alternate routes, public transit, cycling and other transportation options while construction continues.
