Before your consultation

A clearer first step

Two short guides to starting a business and preparing for a tax conversation.

01

PRACTICAL GUIDE · WE PNW

Starting a US business: a first conversation about LLCs, corporations, and EINs

Starting a business begins with your plans: what you will do, where you will operate, and who will be involved. Clear answers make a registration and bookkeeping conversation more useful.

Read the guide

Start with the business structure

LLCs and corporations are different business structures. The IRS explains that your structure affects the income tax return you file, and that choosing one involves both legal and tax considerations. There is no single structure that suits every owner.

Then consider the EIN

For a new LLC or corporation, the IRS says to form the entity with the state before applying for an EIN. The IRS issues EINs free of charge. If you use professional assistance, clarify the separate service fee and exactly which steps it covers.

What to discuss in a consultation

Write a short description of your planned business and list your questions about registration, an EIN, bookkeeping, and future reporting. Ekaterina lists LLC and corporation formation assistance and EIN assistance among her services. Select “Business registration” in the form and briefly describe your needs; you do not need to send personal documents with your initial inquiry.

General information, not individual tax or legal advice. Discuss your circumstances and the service terms with your professional.

PRACTICAL GUIDE · WE PNW

Preparing a US tax return: how to organise your first conversation with a preparer

When income comes from several sources, start by listing them. Employment, self-employment, and business ownership may require different discussions and records. Begin with an overview rather than sending every file at once.

Read the guide

Gather the relevant records

The IRS recommends keeping the tax forms and records you need together. Examples include W-2 and 1099 forms and, for self-employment, records of business income and expenses. Confirm the specific documents needed for your circumstances.

A separate conversation for self-employment

The IRS describes Schedule C as the form for reporting income or loss from a business or profession operated as a sole proprietor. That does not mean the same form applies to every company. Discuss your activity and business structure so the appropriate reporting can be identified.

Make your inquiry specific

Say whether you need an individual return, self-employed reporting, or assistance with a business. Mention whether your bookkeeping is already organised or needs attention. Ekaterina offers tax preparation and bookkeeping; fees and timing are agreed directly. This page’s form only needs your contact details and a general description. Do not submit tax documents or an SSN through it.
