More than 100 students walked out of Fort Vancouver High School on October 22, calling for greater transparency from administrators following allegations involving members of the school’s varsity football team. According to KPTV, citing Vancouver police, authorities are investigating a report of possible sexual contact between students in a locker room. Details of the alleged incident have not been publicly disclosed.

The team competes in American football against other high schools. Two days before the walkout, administrators announced the cancellation of its remaining varsity games. The school attributed that decision to injuries and a shortage of available players, not to findings from the investigation.

Why students walked out

Students expressed frustration over how administrators had communicated with the school community. According to KXL’s account of reporting by KOIN 6, participants wanted greater transparency. One organizer told reporters that students were not asking for every detail, but wanted to know about serious allegations affecting their school.

School officials confirmed the afternoon walkout to KATU. The demonstration reflected concerns about communication and student safety; it did not establish what happened during the alleged incident or who may be responsible.

What administrators have said

On the morning of October 22, Principal Luis A. Castro-Quintanilla sent families a message addressing serious allegations involving varsity football players. He said administrators learned of the allegations the previous week, notified law enforcement and began an internal investigation.

The principal also said the school took steps to protect students who reported the incident and decided to bring in an independent outside investigator. He explained that protecting student privacy and the integrity of the investigation limited what administrators could disclose. His statement is reproduced in KATU’s report.

KPTV reported that police received information about possible sexual contact from a school security employee. The reports reviewed did not establish the date of the alleged incident or the number of students involved.

Why the football games were canceled

On October 20, the school announced that injuries and a shortage of available players meant the varsity team could no longer safely continue competing. Administrators hoped to preserve opportunities for the junior varsity team to play, according to KPTV.

The school reiterated that explanation in its subsequent communication. The cancellation should therefore not be described as punishment for proven misconduct: administrators have not publicly announced such a finding.

What remains unknown

At the time of writing, the reports reviewed did not contain findings from the investigations. No confirmed information about arrests or charges was found. The allegations do not establish guilt.

The circumstances of the alleged incident and the timeline for completing the investigations remain unclear. While administrators cite protective measures and confidentiality requirements, students who participated in the walkout are calling for clearer communication with them and their families.
