Portland City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance on October 28 restricting concealed firearms in municipal buildings used for official meetings.

All 12 council members voted in favor.

The new rules remove a previous exception that allowed Concealed Handgun License holders to bring concealed firearms into certain city spaces.

The restrictions cover City Hall, the Portland Building and the 1900 Building, among other locations.

The ordinance provides exceptions for police officers, security personnel and certain people authorized to carry firearms under state law.

Council President Jamie Dunphy introduced the measure.

City officials say the change is intended to improve safety at public meetings and in municipal facilities.
