Portland Public Schools is considering major changes that could close as many as 14 schools.

The district released three possible scenarios as part of its “rightsizing” process.

One proposal would close 14 schools — 13 elementary schools and Sellwood Middle School. A second proposal would close 11 schools, while a third would leave the current system largely unchanged.

The proposals also include boundary changes, program consolidations and moving students to receiving schools.

District officials say the goal is to create a more consistent level of service as enrollment patterns and building use change.

The proposals have already drawn concern from parents and educators.

Most changes would take effect in fall 2027. The Portland school board is expected to vote on a final plan in December.
