Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak has surpassed 1,000 confirmed cases, making it one of the largest U.S. measles outbreaks in decades.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 1,004 cases across 39 counties as of October 5.
The outbreak has resulted in 198 hospitalizations and five confirmed measles-associated deaths, according to state officials.
Only four of the confirmed cases involved fully vaccinated individuals, representing less than 1% of infections.
State health officials say more than 53,000 MMR vaccine doses were administered across Pennsylvania during September, more than double the amount typically given in a month.
Public-health officials continue to recommend two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, which Pennsylvania says is about 97% effective at preventing measles.
