The City of Portland published holiday food-waste advice on Nov. 2, saying an average Oregon family of four could save up to $2,900 a year by following its tips.

The city recommends planning meals with a recipe app and adjusting quantities to the number and appetites of guests. It also advises checking the pantry and refrigerator before shopping to avoid buying ingredients already at home.

For food that remains, Portland suggests sharing it with guests, freezing individual portions or using it in other dishes. Scraps that cannot be eaten should be composted, the city says; food sent to landfill creates methane.
